Introduction

When it comes to logistics, there are many things which are similar in fresh food supply chain and the supply chain of car manufacturing organizations. There are many companies which have been focusing on creating a value chain which takes into account all of the details of the supply chain network and ends up creating a system which allows the company to not only deliver products on time, but also ensure that their quality is maintained.

In this paper, we will be looking at the supply chain of two different organizations and critically analyzing them. Since we needed a company that was of a global level, having manufacturing facilities worldwide. Therefore, we will be selecting two multinational corporations. While the primary concern of both industries is quality and cost, time and carbon dioxide emission is also of the utmost importance.

When it comes to supply chain, more and more companies are focused on delivering superior quality products while incurring minimal costs, thereby, benefiting the company by generating profits and providing customers a pleasant experience. In this aspect, the two companies which we will be discussing about in this paper will be Subway and Toyota.

It was reported that about one-third of the produced food has been abandoned or wasted yearly (approximately 1.3 billion tons). Two-third of the wasted food (about 1 billion tons) is occurred in supply chain like harvesting, shipping and storage. (Zhong, Xu, Wang, 2016) That is why companies are taking increasing care when it comes to food supply chain management. When it comes to Subway, it has been big news that the company has had to shut down many of its stores in America, even though the company is performing well in other countries. Much of it is due to the problems associated with supply chain.

Food companies have to ensure that the quality of their products is maintained, which is considered to be a massive challenge when it comes to perishable products.

Additionally, the concept of JIT (Just in Tim) delivery system is being adopted by many organizations, for which the need for massive plantations spread out over acres and acres of land increases. One of the biggest problems in providing quality products in fresh food supply chain is that industrial processes take out the organic component from fresh produce. Which might be cost effective but affects the quality of the products (S. Mehra, 2016). Yet at the same time, many of the processes involved in fresh food supply chain are highly preferred due to the low amount of carbon dioxide emitted during them whereas, in the automotive industry, the picture is entirely reversed.

Compared with the car manufacturing companies, which rely heavily on reducing costs by continuously improving their processes and integrating their supply chain by taking in 3PL partners. 全球物流和供应链管理论文代写

Who allow them to manufacture products in a cost effective manner. The fresh food companies rely on suppliers who can meet the increasing demands of the consumers. Subway, is unable to maintain the costs that are being incurred, whereas, for companies like Toyota. The costs are being minimalized through the introduction of improved processes and the quality of the products being used is maintained through different certifications that the companies undertake, and honor.

However, one thing that is remarkably different in both supply chains is the time, i.e. While in automotive industry, the raw materials being used have a durable life. The fresh food industry is more focused on increasing the life of these perishable products and ensuring that they reach the consumers in top condition. (Zhong, Xu, Wang, 2016) This is one of the biggest challenges of the fresh food industry, because if at any time the food rots or even goes stale. Then the product is considered to be lost, which is why many fresh food companies are trying to find ways to lengthen the life time of a fresh food.

The costs of loss of perishable products is far greater, hence, this increases the overall costs of fresh food supply chain, whereas, the car manufacturing corporation doesn’t have to worry about that. However, the emission of carbon dioxide by care manufacturers is off the charts, and thus it effects the area around such factories extremely polluted. (Zhong, Xu, Wang, 2016) Such companies are the primary reason why global warming is such an imminent threat. And more and more companies are being asked by the government and other legal bodies to work on developing processes which reduces the CO2 emission in the atmosphere, thereby, trying to control air pollution. This is greatly dependent on the sourcing of products and how each process utilizes the raw material (Niklas Braese, 2016).

The automotive and food and beverage sectors continue to play integral roles in society, and their supply chains are continually evolving to meet the demands of consumers (Moses, 2015).  

Both industries supply products that are crucial for the consumers, especially in today’s era, where cars are considered to be a necessity instead of just a luxury. While Toyota has been experimenting with the latest technology and new strategies for operations to improve its supply chain management. This is something that is lacking in Subway (Niklas Braese, 2016). The company is caught in an internal struggle, where the top management is unable to come to terms with the best course of action for this food giant, and thus, affecting the overall company’s future.

In order to fully devise a value chain that provides an overall effective logistics system, that takes into the four factors which have been discussed above, both the companies will have to make conscious efforts for improvement. And this can only be made possible when they take actions which are targeted towards the benefit of the environment as well as the customers, instead of the company’s own vested interests.

When it comes to holding a conference in about the contemporary issues and strategies in the global logistics and supply chain management, there are various themes that can be selected which form a basis of the series of conferences which are linked to one another, and aimed at discussing the issues/ problems that have been identified and coming up with solutions together for the partner countries, and bodies involved in the conference.

Following are five themes that I would like to suggest for this conference, which will form the basis of the topics in discussion, along with the research papers and presentations provided and discussed during the conference.

The first theme that we would like to suggest is “Supply Chain Collaboration/ Integration, and Green Supply Chain Issues”.

This is a broad topic that focuses on the issues being faced by the entire world instead of just the Asia Pacific Region. However, it is one that affects all, since most of the companies around the world are facing immense problem in integrating supply chain activities which are harmless for the environment (S. Mehra, 2016). Green supply chain, as it is referred to, is one that is highly focused on utilizing only those activities which allow them to ensure that the environment is not adversely affected in any way, and thus the harmful effects on the surrounding areas and the areas in general are reduced. In the wake of global warming, this is something that needs to be worked upon and it is an issue that is being faced by all the countries in the world, hence, this theme would be extremely important and relevant for the conference.

The second theme that I suggest is, “Supply Chain Risks and Third Party Logistic Issues in Asia”. 全球物流和供应链管理论文代写

This theme is more focused towards the region of Asia, as there are many developing countries and countries with high population such as the India and China, which have many risks involved in supply chain along with the 3PL systems in place (Balon, Sharma, Kumar, 2015). Hence, I feel that this is another relevant theme on which many people would like to present their view and opinions. Therefore, this is one of the themes which can be kept for the conference, with the delegates participating in order to present their views and solutions on the subject matter.

Supply Chain Sustainability and the Role of Ecommerce in Supply Chain is the third theme that we would like to suggest since this is a very broad topic and this can be broken down into multiple panel discussions and presentations by the speakers.

Plenary sessions can also be held discussing the role of digital technology, especially that of E-commerce in supply chain and how it can aid in addressing and solving the issues being faced when it comes to supply chain in Asia (Balon, Sharma, Kumar, 2015). The topic can be funneled down to only the Asia Pacific region. And can also discuss the issues being faced all over the world and the solutions different countries deployed in order to address them. Additionally, creating a sustainable supply chain system is also a challenge that many companies are having difficulty in overcoming. Therefore, this too paves way for the future, by discussing the challenges and suggesting key learning that were obtained from other countries going through a similar phase (S. Mehra, 2016).

Bringing Innovation in the global supply chain system is another theme that can be used for the conference which would be more focused on bringing innovation and highlighting the role of creativity in logistics and supply chain management. 全球物流和供应链管理论文代写

This is extremely important if companies need to survive in this highly competitive world. Not only that it will also provide a ground for understanding the various issues being faced by organizations when it comes to seeing the previous known issues in a new light and thinking out of the box when it comes to solving problems (Balon, Sharma, Kumar, 2015). These are some issues that need to be addressed and are actually creating a lot of problems for the countries tackling global warming, supply chain problems, and at the same time trying to introduce eco-friendly supply chain processes which not only benefit them but the society in general. Therefore, this too would become a topic that is likely to form the basis of a discussion and would be relevant for this conference.

The final and fifth theme that I suggest is “Logistics Corruption in the Asia Pacific and the Need to Have Logistics Database for Developing Future Strategies”. 全球物流和供应链管理论文代写

This is one of those broad topics which is likely to attract a large audience, as corruption is that one basic problem which is being faced by all the countries in this region in one form or another (S. Mehra, 2016). In some countries the level of corruption is extremely high, whereas, in others it is minimal, however, it does exist (Niklas Braese, 2016). So, this is one issue that needs to be addressed. And when corruption exists in a supply chain system it disrupts the entire value chain and affects it at all the different strategic points, therefore, this again is one theme which can be broken down into multiple plenary discussions, and presentations.

At the same time, the need to have a database, which allows the supply chain system to be quantified and collected in the form of data, so as to analyze what works and what doesn’t is another factor which is very important. Data is significant for the development of strategies and unless there is some way for the data to be collected and stored, then making strategies for the future and deciding on a direction becomes extremely difficult (S. Mehra, 2016). Therefore, there is an increasing need for this, and thus would be a good theme for the conference.

These are the five themes that I suggest for the conference, based on the need and importance of these discussions.

Case based examples can be easily provided in all, where analysis can be conducted and participation by the delegates can be ensured. The analysis of why each topic was suggested has also been provided for better understanding. To conclude, these topics can not only be used as the main theme, but also the main agenda of the conference.
